Vericare (known formerly as Senior Psychology Services) was founded in San Diego, California in 1991 by Thomas Cooper, M.D. The company was formed shortly after Medicare began recognizing psychologists as independent health care providers to Medicare beneficiaries. Prior to this, seniors were forced to pay out of pocket for needed psychological services. The other legislative initiative which promoted the provision of behavioral health services within the long term care environment was the Omnibus Budget and Reconciliation Act (OBRA) of 1987. This legislation mandated numerous changes and improvements in the care of nursing home residents that focused on patient rights and quality of life issues. The mandate created from OBRA followed by the funding of the mental health benefit by Medicare effectively gave birth to ancillary mental health services in nursing homes and Vericare was one of the very early entrants into the business. The founding values of quality services provided by quality people, promises being kept, prompt response to any situation and an honest/high integrity approach to everything undertaken remain the bedrock on which the company operates today….
